ABOUT KOYCEGIZ

Scenic Koycegiz Lake, located near to Dalaman Airport and within convenient distance of Fethiye and Marmaris, is well known for its natural hot springs and mud baths. The lake narrows into a channel, flowing into the Dalyan River and emptying into the Mediterraneanan at one of Turkey's most spectacular beaches. The beach is the breeding ground of the Caretta sea turtle. The reed-edged river meanders to the sea, surmounted by 4th century BC Lucian rock tombs. Nearby are the ruins of the ancient city of Counos.

Situated next to a natural channel between Koycegiz Lake and the Mediterranean Sea, the Riza Çavus Thermal Baths form a water pool and a mud pond, with a flow rate of about eight liters per second. The mud and mineral baths can accommodate 1,000 persons per day. A second spring, Velibey Thermal Baths, is located 1.5 km north of Riza Çavus, has similar qualities and a flow rate of 20 liters per second.

The town of Koycegiz lies at the northern end of a lake of the same name and is joined to the Mediterranean by a natural channel. This unique environment is being preserved as a nature and wildlife sanctuary. A road shaded with aromatic frankincense trees leads to the tiny village of Dalyan on the inland waterway. The maze of channels is easily explored by boat as you immerse yourself in this tranquil dream world. The restaurants which line the waterways specialize in delicious meals of fresh fish. High on the cliff face, at a bend in the river, above the fascinating ancient harbor city of Counos, magnificent tombs were carved into the rock. The Dalyan Delta, with a long, golden sandy beach at its mouth,is a nature conservation area and a refuge for sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) and blue crabs.

Koycegiz is one of the few places in the world where you can see the famous frankincense tree (Liquid amber). Also, Koycegiz and the surrounding environment is a protected area. The town is only 35km from Dalaman airport, 60km from Marmaris and 70km from Fethiye. You can find regular buses to all parts of the country. Koycegiz’s honey, thyme and citrus fruits are very famous.

The Monday market is an enjoyable experience, wound around the small streets one quickly becomes lost in the atmosphere and range of goods on sale, from your weekly fruit and Vegetables to teas and spices.
